Swim Week-Swimwear-Making Class

Overview

Swim Week-Swimwear-Making Class

Ramp up your swimwear making skills, at our Swim Week-Swimwear-Making Class. You will learn to fit and construct two major types of suits – the tank (maillot) and the princess line suit. Each of these suits can be changed into a tankini – a two piece suit that covers the midriff and tummy. You will also learn to make a two-piece crop top and banded bottoms. Construction techniques include the proper application of elastic edging, swimsuit lining, and two different bra cup insertion methods. To learn all about bikini construction and fit, or about ruching and colour blocking, you might consider taking Master Swim. We usually have the two classes back-to-back for out of town sewists.

This class is intended for those with intermediate to advanced sewing skills – definitely NOT for a beginner sewist. You do not need to know how to sew swimwear – but you must already know how to sew.

Machines available for rent for students who do not wish to bring their own machine. Machine rental is $50 for the 5 days.

$600.00 CAD

Please note:

• Class begins at 10 am and ends at 4:30 pm. Doors open at 9:30 am.
• Bring your lunch or you can buy lunch out. We have a fridge, sink, and microwave in our classroom kitchen.

What you get in the class

You get 5 whole days of lessons of making swimwear for yourself under the watchful eye of our patient and qualified instructor. You can make virtually anything you want during Swim Week. You also get the Denise pattern, you’ll do both styles of swimwear the princess line and tank suit, and learn to make a built in bra, Swim Week is a prerequisite to our Masters Swimwear Class. You’ll learn an easy way to make a two piece crop top swimsuit.

Skill Level

Intermediate.

While Swimwear sewing is not difficult it does require a certain amount of skill. We like to say “if you can set in a sleeve you can make a swimsuit.”

Lesson Plan

Monday

In Swim Week, we start off by examining the types of swimwear out there and learning the difference between the types of bust support you may encounter. We are going to learn to make and fit two major classifications of suits this week – the one-piece tank suit (also called a maillot) and the princess line suit. Each suit we make this week will have one of two types of support built into it. This afternoon, we will all be going on a shopping trip to a swimsuit fabric store!

Tuesday

We have our fabric now! This morning, you will learn how to make adjustments to pre-fit the swimsuit before we cut. Then you’ll start cutting into your lovely new fabric and lining! As you set up your machine, you’ll learn about needles, thread and other notions that will make swimsuit and sewing with spandex a breeze. The first suit has pre-formed foam cups built in for support – learn how to fit them, rotate them to suit the body and how to insert them into the suit. We have tricks to make that part easy!

Wednesday

You will be amazed at how quickly that first suit sews together today, and how easy it is to apply elastics to all the edges of the suit. It’s easy-peasey, once you know some tricks to guarantee success.  By this afternoon, you’ll be trying on and admiring your first swimsuit. Have you decided what fabric you will use for your second?

Thursday

You are not going to choose the same suit you just finished – but now you will challenge yourself a bit more. It is time to make a princess line suit with a built-in bra for support. This is not a shelf bra, but a real support bra, made from your own bra pattern (bring it if you have one). You’ll learn about colour blocking or other adornments you can add to this second suit to turn it into a suit that rivals ready-to-wear.

Friday

Today if you finish the second suit early (and students often do) you can start a third suit. We’ll show you how to change your one piece suit into a tankini or a crop top two-piece bathing suit. You could have another two suits to add to your swimsuit wardrobe this week! The only problems you might face are choosing among the many possibilities and the fabrics to choose from! At the end of the day, we take pictures of the suits you’ve made (no-you don’t have to model it if you don’t want). The photos of your lovely creations become part of our Digital fashion Show so we can show the world what you’ve created in Swim Week.
