Bra Design and Draft Class (5 days)

Overview

Bra Design and Draft Class (5 days)

Can you imagine drafting a bra pattern to your actual body measurements, changing the original style lines to a designer look – then sew that bra up with the knowledge that it will fit? If so, the Bra Design and Draft Class is the class for you.

Our five-day class teaches you to create a design, then create the pattern by drafting it from body measurements. The basic bra can then be changed to create any style – whether you want a vertical, diagonal, curved seam or a long line. You will learn to tweak the pattern so it fits exactly.

Please note, there will be no bra sewing direction given in this class – the class is concerned with the design and draft, rather than the construction. You MUST be familiar with both full band and partial band bra construction techniques and be able to sew those bras without guidance before attending this class.

Machines available for rent for students who do not wish to bring their own machine. Machine rental is $50 for the 5 days.

$900.00 CAD

Please note:

• Class begins at 10 am and ends at 4:00 pm. Doors open at 9:30 am.
• Bring your lunch or you can buy lunch out. We have a fridge, sink and microwave in our classroom kitchen.

What you get in the class

You’ll learn to design and draft bras from body measurements. You get a complete step by step book and week long instruction. You also receive enough fabric and materials to create a test bra during the class. You’ll learn how to tweak the fit of the pattern you create and you’ll learn to change the  style lines of the bra so that you can recreate popular ready-to-wear or any other bra you have seen or can think of.

Skill Level

You need to be making bras already in order to take this class. We will not be teaching basic construction in this class, it is an advanced class. This is not a class for beginners, but for someone who is interested in making bras for other women or who wants to really hone her bra-making skills. You should be familiar with the Pin-up Girls patterns and their construction.

Lesson Plan

Monday

Our first day at Bra Design and Daft Class is spent learning the theory and practicality of making bras for every woman on the planet. You’ll learn about how bras are sized, as well as the areas that change as the body grows in size. You’ll also learn what 10 measurements to take from the body and how to take them.

Tuesday

The second day at Bra Design and Daft Class  is spent learning to draft the frame of the bra. Also called the cradle, the frame is the first component you need to draft, and it is based on the diameter of the breast. Armed with our wires we marked on Monday, we will draft the frame and the band.

Wednesday

On Wednesday morning, I will show you how to reduce your back band to use stretch fabrics, so there is a bit of match involved. Don’t worry, we use calculators for this! Then get our your compass, because we are drafting the lower cup! Using 3 critical measurements, the lower cup is not as difficult as you might think. Then we draft the upper cup. Since you are all experienced drafters now (!) the upper cup won’t prove to be any more difficult than the lower cup. In the afternoon we break into teams and measure each other. Each student will draft a bra from her partner’s measurements.

Thursday

The draft for your “client” will move along much more quickly than the first draft at the beginning of the week, and once that is finished, you will sew up the bra you created. To the sewing machines we go, to sew up the client’s new bra.

Friday

On our last day, we are trying on the bras we made, to check the fit and learning what we might change if the pattern needs tweaking. Then you are going to learn the fun you can have with the basic drafted pattern. You’ll learn how to change the seam line into a diagonal, vertical or curved seam, all from the paper draft. You’ll see that with your skills from the Bra Design & Draft Class and a bit of practice, you can duplicate any bra you see!
