The holidays are almost here, and for those of you wanting a gift for that special couple or for yourself, here’s how we made the His and Hers Santa Shorts.
We used the Lillebror version of the Mens Underwear pattern to make the Mens shorts. We shortened both the waistline to make them “sexier” and the legs. We purchased stretch crushed velour for the fabric. I love this fabric – it was easy to work with and the texture of the fabric hides the seaming. We used fold-over binding instead of hemming the legs, although you could hem if you want to. The black belt is our 1.5″ (37 mm) plush waistband elastic. To make the elastic look like a belt, we added a 1″ (25 mm) belt buckle we bought at a sewing store across the street. We didn’t want a buckle the full width of the elastic so we sewed a 1″ (25 mm) piece of elastic to the waistband to hold the buckle in place.
For the ladies version, we used our boy shorts pattern. We didn’t need to modify this pattern for fit as it already sits lower on the hip than regular briefs.
We cut them out of the velour same as the Mens. Remember that stretch velour like all velvet-like fabrics has a nap. This means that all the pieces must have the top of the pattern facing the same direction otherwise, some pieces will appear darker than the others.
When we sewed the waistband elastic on the top edge, we aligned the edge of the elastic with the raw edge of the fabric and stitched the lower edge with a three-step zig-zag. Then we cut away the fabric behind to reduce the bulk. Don’t worry – the fabric doesn’t fray.
We added the buckle to the waistband of these ladies shorts as well.
I hope you find these His and Hers Santa shorts as adorable as we did, and as easy to make. Let us know if you made them and show off your makes on Facebook and Instagram #hisandherssantashorts and don’t forget to tag us @bramakerssupply.
Happy Christmas to you all, and to all …rip-free sewing!
