100-year-old Underwear Challenge Entries

We challenged you to sew underwear using inspiration from the last 100 years (or the next 100). With our opportunity this month to stay at home and sew, many of you now have 100 minute-old underwear! Here are the entries to last month’s challenge.

Whenever I make a new bra I promise myself to make matching panties. That rarely happens.  This month challenged me to get some of those panties made. Two of the six completed pairs are shown here, both with bras made for 2018 Challenges, “Birthday Suit” and “Lacey Days of Summer.”  This evening I interrupted my nursing home face mask production to make a couple masks just for me. Hey, these are challenging times, and sometimes it feels good to lighten up a bit.  Stay well, Sister Bra Makers.

A quick pair of panties to match a bra I made, with some lace embellishment for the March competition.

Here is my bra makers challenge for March 2020: Underwear!
I had a stash of this really soft bamboo fabric and decided to use this challenge as a reason to make some panties with it. I used the Maui bottoms from the Triangles and Tangas pattern and added a lace waistband and external leg band elastic. I also used techniques from the Bluprint course to make these boyshorts with a lace waistband.

I dove into the boyshort course on Bluprint.  A few hours later I have a pair of cheeky panties!!  With the return of the highwaist pant, I need undies to go under them.  These are made without elastic!!

Attached my contribution. I am sewing a few new spring sets. This is my first after a few months undies break. A bra without iron (underwire, rings or closure) plus a hipster. 

Next I used the amethyst bra&supply kit I won last year with the challenge to sew high waist panties and just enough fabric for a matching bralette. Colours unfortunately are not bright on my evening photos.

The March challenge was perfectly timed for me. I need to restock my panty drawer. I’ve used my self-drafted pattern, from Beverly’s Craftsy class. And I’m thrilled with each of them.

I ordered a lovely red bamboo underwear kit from BMS. I drafted panties and boy shorts from the directions in Beverly’s Craftsy/Bluprint classes (Sewing Panties: construction and fit, and Lingerie Essentials: boy shorts). These are my test pairs. I sewed the panties in February and the boy shorts this month. I am very pleased with the panties. I needed to add additional width to the back of my gusset (and adjust the leg curve correspondingly). The boyshorts were a lot cheekier, but I had placed my drafting curve with an upwards curve rather than downwards. I will also need to add width to the “gusset” in the boy shorts.

Hope you and the ones you love are safe and well. After a weekend of skiing, my friend chose a “his and hers undies” set in Steel Blue wickable anti-bacterial stretch fabric as her wedding gift. Hers are PUG (Pin-up Girls) waist high with high cut legs and his are PUG Lillebror. Since this fabric has mechanical give in the crosswise direction and none in the lengthwise direction, I went up two pattern sizes and added about two inches in the lengthwise direction. They turned out even better than expected.  A gift that comes with wishes for many years of wedded bliss.

Good day eh! I have had the underwear kit since Jan 2019 and finally getting something sewn. I still have to add the elastic for the waistband but not sure if I will get that done before tomorrow night.

I have made a bunch of panties this month, testing various fabrics and elastics. So far, my favorite elastic is fold over elastic.

I hope you are all doing well! I made some panties for myself using 2 different patterns and mixing them together. The bamboo blend is super comfy and I’m hoping to tweak this pattern to make period panties for my next undies challenge.

Dear Ladies at Bra-Makers Supply,
Hope you are all doing well in this challenging and unusual time. The last couple weeks I have found some comfort in sewing some rather practical items and using fabrics from my stash. The Cheryl panty pattern is a favourite of mine. The ones in the photo were modified to have a front and back panel. The look is flattering and it allowed me to cut out a third pair of panties from an already small remnant. Regards, Diane
